A miscarriage or instant abortion is a condition in which there is a loss of fetus before 23rd week of pregnancy or simply during the first trimester of pregnancy. There are multiple factors behind the causes of miscarriage in pregnancy.

Below is the list of some common causes that may contribute to multiple miscarriages:

Genetic or Chromosomal Issues, malnutrition, drug usage, maternal age, several diseases and infections, hormonal issues, diabetes, trauma, obesity, cervical issues, uterus issues, blood pressure, under or over-weight, body trauma, etc.

Genetic & Chromosomal Issues:

One of the major causes of miscarriage are genetic & chromosomal abnormality, these issues result in abnormal development of the fetus. One study reported that almost 50 to 60% of miscarriages occur in the first trimester of pregnancy are due to genetic & chromosomal abnormalities.

Abnormal Hormone Levels

Another major cause of Miscarriages is abnormal hormonal levels that lead to improper development of endometrial lining.

Structural Problems

Miscarriages can also happen as a result of anatomical problems, such as the size and shape of uterus, presence of fibroids, cysts etc.

Cervical Issues

Incompetent the cervix is one of the causes of miscarriage, in such cases cervical muscles are not strong enough to hold the pressure of growing fetus, leading towards premature widening of the cervical opening.

Infections

Certain infections like Rubella (German measles), herpes simplex, cytomegalovirus or chlamydia can also affect fetal development and ultimately results in miscarriage.

Environmental Factors

Sometimes external environmental toxins result in fetal damage or miscarriage.

Immunologic Causes

One of the immunologic problems that cause miscarriage is the development of anti-phospholipid antibodies. It results in thickening of the blood, and ultimately decreased blood supply to the fetus resulting in miscarriage. Blood thinner medicines are used to treat such issues.
